Lawn Care - The pH of the soil can influence many factors, such as the availability of nutrients in the soil, the soil life and of the susceptibility of plants to various diseases. Soil life "is the term used to define various micro-organisms that decompose the complex compounds in more simple organic forms, enriching the soil. Some microorganisms thrive in alkaline soils, while others prefer an acid soil. The soil analysis helps to determine the pH of the soil, which may make modifications to improve it.

Methods to measure the pH of the soil

The soil analysis can be done by taking soil samples from different areas of your garden and mix. This helps to determine the average level of pH of the soil. While the taking of samples, make sure that it's not taken immediately after the fertilizer is applied or when the ground is wet.

Analysis of soils with pH test kits

You can get the pH test of your soil to make from any garden center or you can even do it yourself. For this reason, you will need to purchase a kit of pH test that is readily available in nurseries or hardware stores. Test components that come with these kits include a test tube, test solution and a color chart. To perform a soil analysis, the sample is placed in its ground in the test tube and add a few drops of test solution. Then, shake well and keep aside for an hour or less for the sedimentation. The nature of its soil makes the solution in the tube to change its color. The new color indicates the level of pH of the soil. Compare the color of the sample in the test tube with the colors of the color table. The one that matches the color of the sample gives the pH of your soil. Some teams also have brochures that help interpret the result.

Using different methods

If you cannot organize the test kit, you can even test the pH of your soil at home with some ingredients and tools commonly available.

Method 1

Pull out a bit of soil from your garden and put it in a bowl, add half a cup of vinegar. If the mixture bubbles, this means that the soil is alkaline. If shows no reaction, add ½ cup of water in newly picked up from the ground. Then mix a little bit of sodium bicarbonate in it and to see if the mixture bubbles. If you do, it means that the soil is very acid.

Method 2

Dig a pit for 2 - 3 inches deep in the soil and fill it with distilled water to form a muddy puddle. Get the test probe and clean it with a tissue paper to make sure it is clean. Insert the probe into the hole and take a reading after 1 minute. The test probe cannot cover the range of pH from 1 to 14, however, indicates if it is below 7 or above 7. If the scale is less than 7, the soil is acidic, alkaline if it is not. Exact 7 of the scale indicates the neutral ground.

Method 3

Picks up a spoonful of earth of different areas of your garden and mix well. Spread on a newspaper and let it dry. Then take half of a cup of ground in a jar and fill the container with distilled water. Allow the mixture to adjust until the soil accumulates in the bottom of the jar. Takes the litmus paper and insert it in the water. If it turns red, the soil is acid, litmus paper blue indicates that the soil is alkaline.

The degree of acidity or alkalinity can be measured only with pH meter or of the color chart that comes with the test kit. Most plants grow well in a pH range of 6.5 to 7.0 , which is mainly neutral. Exact pH level helps to amend the soil. If the soil is acidic, its modification by the addition of lime or wood ash, while the alkaline soil can be amended by the addition of sulfur or of pine needles. You have to wait a few weeks / months to see how it works the amendment, as it has effect slowly. The end of the autumn or early spring is considered as a good time to test the pH of your soil, as the sufficient time to make corrections for the planting season.

The knowledge of the soil pH can really improve the growth of plants. Therefore, use any of the methods of soil analysis described above to make your garden soil more conducive to the plants.
